Architecture
Hyper-V failover cluster architecture
Hyper-V fits Windows-centric estates: existing licensing, Active Directory integration and familiar management tooling — with clustering for availability.

FAQ
Hyper-V questions we are asked
- Do we need extra licences for Hyper-V?
- The hypervisor role is included with Windows Server; what matters is guest OS licensing, which depends on edition and core count. We map the licence position before proposing a design.
- What does a cluster witness do?
- It provides an additional quorum vote so an even-numbered cluster can decide which side stays online after a communication failure. Without it, both sides may shut down.
- Is Hyper-V Replica a backup?
- No. Replica gives you a warm copy for site failure; it will faithfully replicate corruption or deletion. Independent backups with retention remain mandatory.
- Can Hyper-V and VMware coexist during migration?
- Yes. Estates commonly run both while workloads move in waves, with shared networking and a defined cutover order per application.
